A Lull in the Sea
Long ago, humans lived in the sea. However, some humans defied the Sea God and moved to the land, creating the division that now exists between Shioshishio, the Sea Village, and Oshiooshi, the village of the land. Now, four middle school students from the Sea Village, Manaka Mukaido, Hikari Sakishima, Chisaki Hiradaira, and Kaname Isaki must attend Mihama Middle School on the land. While getting used to their new lives, these four and their new friend from the land, Tsumugu Kihara, learn how true bonds of love and friendship can overcome any separation.

Volume 1

Due to the closure of their middle school, four students from the sea, Manaka Mukaido, Hikari Sakishima, Chisaki Hiradaira, and Kaname Isaki must attend middle school on the land, despite the growing tension between the land and sea people. While getting used to their new lives, these four and their new friend from the land, Tsumugu Kihara, plan to put on an Ofunehiki, a festival traditionally organized by the land and the sea people, in an attempt to create peace between the two villages.

Volume 2

Five years have passed since the Ofunehiki and Shishishio's hibernation. Itaru and Akari now have a son, Akira. Sayu and Miuna, now 14, attend Mihama Middle School. All the while, Chisaki continues to worry about the whereabouts of Hikari and the others while living with Tsumugu and his grandfather. One day, an unexpected discovery leads everyone to revisit the events of the Ofunehiki and unlock the mysteries lying deep beneath the sea...

Hikari Sakishima

Hikari lives with his sister Akari, who works for a supermarket on the land, and his father Tomoru, who is the chief priest of the Sea Village. He has a strong sense of justice and is very caring, but he has a tendency to use harsh words. He loses his temper when it comes to problems involving his childhood friends. He is a good cook.

Manaka Mukaido

She's a huge klutz and can be really indecisive at times, but she has a very strong sense of right and wrong like Hikari. She gives 100% for anything and everything. This sometimes backfires because she doesn't consider the consequences, which causes trouble for those around her.

Chisaki Hiradaira

She is childhood friends with Hikari and the other children from the sea, but she's more of the older sister type. Even though she's reserved at first, she's good at becoming friends with people over time. She's very shy when it comes to love.

Kaname Isaki

Contrary to Hikari's outgoing personality, Kaname is more calm and reserved. He takes in his surroundings before acting. He's cute and cool looking, but there's something feminine about him.

Tsumugu Kihara

An 8th grader who lives with his grandfather, Isamu, on the land. He helps his grandfather with fishing. He's calm, mysterious, and doesn't let anyone affect him too much. He is very interested in the sea and is curious about Hikari and friends.

Miuna Shiodome

A 3rd grader who lives on the land. She lost her mother when she was young and currently lives with her father. She's not necessarily shy, but she is calm and mature for an elementary schooler.

Sayu Hisanuma

Miuna's classmate and best friend. She's got a strong personality, despite being bullied in the past. She always tries to get in Hikari's way. She has a tendency to use advanced words for an elementary schooler.

Lord Uroko

The guardian of Shioshishio. He looks young, but talks like a seasoned old man. He enjoys watching people he's cursed. Sometimes he will unexpectedly give good advice. After putting everyone in Shioshishio in hibernation, he goes missing.
