Hello, NISA Forums!

Postby Prinny Supervisor » Thu Dec 11, 2014 10:39 am

Ahoy all, my name's Alex, and I'm a Localization Editor at NISA. And I'm also a new mod on these boards! Nice to meet you all!

Since I've started here, I've worked on tons of projects, the most recent of which being Chronicles of the Going Home Club and Criminal Girls. I absolutely love it here, and I'm excited to be an active part of the community!

I'd be happy to answer any questions you guys have! Thanks, doods!

PS: I'm not by any means Houk's replacement, and probably won't be as active as he was. I did sit next to him his last few months at the company, though. So that's something.

PPS: If you have a specific question about Criminal Girls, it's probably best to keep that on the appropriate board. I read it frequently and will be adding my two cents to that piggy bank soon.

Hi there. I saw your username in the "Who is Online" section a little earlier and was wondering if you were a new moderator for the forum. The username definitely fits I have to admit.

Regardless, welcome.

Hello!

My question is how different is it, for yourself, working on an anime versus a game?

Oh they're completely different mediums. Working with an anime, the script is controlled and precise: you write the lines (and keep them as close to the Japanese meaning as possible), time them to the subtitles, and finalize it all. There's almost no wiggle room: sometimes, lines have to be changed not because of any localization issues, grammar, or cultural references, but because of something as simple as the length of the shot. "Yes, we will absolutely do that." becomes "Yes, we're on it!" for example. Sometimes, expressing an idea in Japanese takes 2 words, but in English it would take 20. It's a fun challenge!

Games have way more text, which has its pros and cons. It's a challenge because of the volume of work that needs to be done, and the consistency that has to be maintained through thousands of lines of text (and in some cases, hundreds of hours of gameplay). But because games go at the player's pace, text can be more interpretive and elaborate. There's a lot more to work with when establishing character and themes.

So I guess to sum it up, the biggest difference is that anime goes at its own speed, and the editor has to keep up with it, whereas in a game, the editor controls the flow a little more. As for me, well, I kind of like them both, as long as I get to rotate between them. Doing 2 anime or 2 games in a row would probably kill me!

Well then I guess I may as well ask, what genres of games do you like?

I have a question: How did you get into localization?

I have been interested in learning more about the industry and possibly finding work in it. I was recently out of work and sent some probing e-mails around asking various sources if they had information to share (Carpe Fulgur, Seven Seas, I think I PM'd Houk too) but unfortunately got no replies :( I was specifically wondering how relevant a degree in Translation Studies is, compared to just having demonstrable mastery over the language or having, say, a N1 Certificate of Proficiency.

RPGs (especially MMORPGs), strategy, horror, and FPSs are my wheelhouse. I am terrible at fighting games and MOBAs.

I'm currently playing Wildstar, TF2 (my go-to "I'm bored" game), Dragon Age: Origins (to prepare for Inquisition), and 999.
