Where to start the series?

I'm considering giving the series a shot, but I have no idea what game to try out first.

Can some please point me in the right direction?

I have a PS3 and PS Vita. I also have a PSP and a PS2, but I would prefer to focus on the newer platforms if those will do.

I haven't played any myself, but if you care about story continuity (which they aren't big on generally) you just have to start at the beginning of a sub-series, as many of the games have nothing to do with many of the others.
The latest series are the Arland games (Rorona/Totori/Meruru) and whatever they're calling the ones in Ayesha's setting.
Totori and Meruru have rereleases on the Vita, but not Rorona as of yet (as it's often considered the weakest game of the three and more in need of retooling).

I'd rec starting with Atelier Totori since, in my opinion, Rorona's mechanics felt clunky the moment I started playing it and I never got very into it, but Totori improves on a lot of those. Continuity isn't really a big thing in these games other than some references if I recall correctly, so yeah, Totori.

Start with Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland.
