Eh, I can't really disagree. You could say that they're bland, though that's not neccessarily bad. Atelier likes having a straight-laced main character so that their more absurd supporting cast can seem more over-the-top and interesting.

On topic, no male leads. Atelier Iris and Mana Khemia were more like phases when Atelier wanted to try being a classic JRPG instead of being Atelier. It passed, so we're back to how things were when Atelier Marie started the whole thing, admittably with more objectifying than in the past, sadly.

You know, when I played Atelier Totori, and Rorona became a capable alchemist to be able to teach Totori, as her teacher. Back then, I still wished to have played as Rorona in the sequels, as she traveled around the world, and teaching girls like Totori the wonders of alchemy. To me, it could be interesting if the characters you play can teach a character that is capable of learning alchemy, and then start controlling that character afterword, if they have enough experience.

If only the Atelier series can delve even deeper than what they have now: There is so much the series can take itself, while the formula remains traditional and fun. And story is just a bonus.

You kinda got you wish. The next atelier has a Male lead. However, it is a sequel to ayesha.
