Toradora? Can I do this?

Postby youko » Fri Jul 20, 2012 12:34 pm

Is it possible to understand this anime if I just buy the second box set? I don't want to wait till I can find the first part in premium and it feels like a waste to buy standard when NIS makes such wonderful premium editions.

In the mean time I shall continue to search the internet every night.

You could do this, but considering that you would be skipping the first half of the show, you would definitely be missing out on more than a few key events. A lot of the initial relationship build-up occurs in the first half, so the later events might have less of an impact if you skip the parts before it.

Now if you were to watch the second half before buying the first half, would you go back and watch it again all the way through? I sort of wonder how it will change your perception of the first half when you already know what's going to happen later on. :P

Alternatively, if you're in the US you can watch the first half of the series streaming on Hulu before jumping into the second half of the series on DVD, if that works for you. I do understand everyone's desire to own the Premium version of Toradora, since it is a really nice release.

I was definitely planning to rewatch it after I could get the first volume. I'm asking about this because I'm worried about the second premium also going out of print before I can find the first one.
Thanks for telling me about hulu! I've done the skipping volumes in anime before with mixed results.

I honestly don't think you have much to worry about in regards of the 2nd Vol. Premium becoming unavailable. RightStuf has no counters on it, and it's still available here at NISA's store as well. Another thing to mention is that during their last holiday sale RightStuf bundled the standard vol. 1 with the premium vol. 2, most likely to move some of those left-over vol. 2s.

Now finding a vol. 1 is a completely different story. They're only floating around from second hand sellers at this point, and it will stay like that unless NISA decides to produce more of them. If they did, it would probably help clear out more of those vol. 2s, but at the same time will probably lower their sales for the standard editions. If only the premium versions weren't so nice! ;)

I keep checking around every night but if you see it in your internet adventures could you give me a heads up? I've already called NIS help line and there are no plans to re-release vol 1 premium edition yet. The premium editons are the reason I put other anime I wanted to buy on the back burner. I'm a sucker extras and pretty packaging.

Just buy the part 2 premium and don't watch it. Watching part 2 without seeing part 1 is the absolute worst thing you can do.
Waiting on the other mk2 avatars.

I have to agree with this

You'd ruin the show on sooooo many levels

Thank you everyone! I'll wait until I'm finished on hulu before I buy the second part. Hopefully the first set will crop up somewhere on the internet in between.

I got 2 coming in the mail now because I saw the counter at 11 on rightstuf. I'm still looking for the first volume so if someone sees it please give me a heads up.

Wow, I'm sort of surprised to see it finally hitting the counter. Thanks for mentioning that. As far as finding a vol. 1, I check eBay pretty often, but it's rare that they show up. I think most people who have it are holding onto it at this point. Right now eBay is probably the best bet for a random one to surface.

Speak of the devil, there's one listed now on eBay. Still sealed as well, that one might get expensive.

I saw that but thank you very much for the heads up.

Edit: shot up in price in the few hours I was away. I don't think I'm going to win since I have to be at work when the auction ends. Maybe I should just jack the price up really high before I leave.

I lost by ten dollars and a few seconds. :( Urgh, please rerelease volume 1 premium NISAmerica if people are bidding them up to three times the original price they'll buy it at $47.99-$55.99 from your store.
