Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1,2,3 coming to Steam

Postby Gradon » Mon Dec 22, 2014 8:55 am

Announced in Dengeki magazine in Japan, Idea Factory president Sato confirmed that the Re;birth games (and Fairy Fencer F) are coming to Steam in Japanese and English.

“We’ve already decided to release the Neptunia series on PC and in English through Steam next year,” said Sato.

“Nowadays, the demand for moé is quite high overseas, so, we must quickly release the main titles,” added Idea Factory business development manager Damien Urvois. “We also plan to release Fairy Fencer F on Steam next year.”

Sato also mentioned his dreams of expanding mobile games overseas, and says Idea Factory are currently working on releasing them in China and other parts of South-East Asia as well.

If things go smoothly [in the smartphone expansion realm] Urvois said that they may also release a Hakuoki game for smartphone in English. This will be higher resolution compared to the PSP, and fully-voiced as well, so they’ll take up about 2gb of storage space.

To be honest, I read through this as if I was reading the local news page on the newspaper... (IOW, I don't find it very interesting or exciting).

I think it's pretty cool. For all the flak they get, they clearly want to deliver to their fans. Gotta give them credit for that.

It would be good news...If it wasn't on Steam.
Unless they will a) use a DRM free service like GoG; b) support an OS that is not Windows I will never consider or support their PC ports.

It'd be pretty stupid of them to support non-Windows based PCs. There's no consumer base for Unix derivatives that would be profitable for the time and money it would take to port the game. They're a business, not a charity. Steam is a good choice because of the millions of current users and the fiscal ease that developers can get their products on it.

It's good for them, not for me. I do not want to use that golden cage, therefore these releases are pointless for me.

While that's fair for you, if we're talking a PC release of niche games, then it's still realistically the best choice.

Are there any Japanese games on GoG? I don't think that'll happen otherwise.
I know some of my friends who will now be interested with these hitting Steam.

Edit:

Does this mean that the games would have to be greenlit or not?

Steam users are one of the biggest supporters of niche games, so this can only be good news for me. Not so good news for the vita, but most fans that are interested in the platform would've bought it by now, if ever, so it's no big deal.

... Except for the fact that two of the three games here haven't even been released for the Vita here yet?

IF is an established publisher who can license their own products, so no, they will not be on Greenlight at all. It's just like any other PC release from a larger company, the games will release just like any other.

Seeing as how they said "franchise" I'm thinking they may be aiming for the console releases first and foremost. Granted, they could just give us -every- Neptunia title. I'd be willing to triple dip most of them thanks to the prospect of potentially mods ~

They said it would take about a year to port these, so the only one that would be affected is Re;Birth 3. Even then, multiple platforms means more perspective customers.

That's not really interesting for me. I'd pay for a Linux version, not for a Windows port. If I have to choose between closed system, then I may as well get the console version.

No one is trying to change your opinion, Xizro.
