Doesn't work for images, and would have not worked for your case since I'd still end up clicking in the link to do the highlight.

If anything, NISA should do like Sonic Retro that ended up settling on having two kind of spoiler tags: the kind we have now here and an "inspoiler" tag that's the highlighting method (that works for in-paragraph text). Except the text in an inspoiler tag will appear if you hover the mouse over it, no need to select the text.
