HPDN or HPDN MK2

Postby NISA » Tue Jun 12, 2012 11:04 pm

iv always wondered which version of HPDN people liked better. I have always preferred the first over the 2nd just because the game play was much more simple and the characters were not so generic as the new ones are now. I liked the dialogues better and the attack sequences were not so fast and the way they are in MK2 as how they are so short truly ruins the moment of the attack for me its not nearly as epic. Special attacks are hard to use now in mk2 and you cannot transform anytime you want and will shutdown if you cannot manage SP. Also status ailments in the first one actually had a part in the game and COULD AFFECT BOSSES but now they cannot affect most mosnters which makes moves with the poison or stun effect basically useless and the first one had RED as a character to. Though mk2 has much more content to which you can customize your characters with I still the the first was better. But one thing I hate about both is that the monsters will never frigin change only change color. Well thats my argument

We use HDN not HPDN =P
Sik is pronounced like "seek", not like "sick".

Pretty sure it's what Sik said...

And the first two games are like night and day.

If someone would've asked me soon after I got my JP copy of Mk2, I would've said Mk2. But now, unless the EN copy of Mk2 changes something when I get it in July (probably), I say the first one. Mk2 does have better sound and story though, but I like the gameplay more in the first one.

My ratings as of now: HDN 85%, Mk2 83%

mk2, unlike the first one it was more streamlined in it's story, plus no travelling through a weak dungeon to visit other landmasses. I think the combat is better as well, doesn't drag on and adds another dimension to the battles. However despite that it's not as strong character wise, I miss Red.

I didn't really like HDN very much actually, it felt like there were too many hoops to jump through. The Terraportation thing was just annoying, I wasn't a big fan of the grid-like dungeons, and the combat really felt flat. Items and healing were a pain, battles dragged on and I just skipped animations. I had a whole bunch of gripes really. The only reason I played it as long as I did was because I liked the concept of the game.

HDN2 improved on basically all of my gripes. They tried a lot of new things, not all were perfect, but I love the new combat, the large selection of playable characters and the myriad little systems. Combat is the biggest thing for me though, it felt like a chore in the first one, in mk2 it was actually fun. My only issues with mk2 come from the lackluster pacing and writing for the story. A little more time spent there and I feel it could have been something really special.

I See where your coming from but what really kinda killed mk 2 for me was the lack of special moves and how fast they were cause if u compare HPDN's Infinite Slash with MK2s version i think the first one was better and even 5pb's special in the first one was much longer and it would heal your HP to the max and damage bosses

mk2 for me because the dungeons are a lot more interesting , music is better and the gameplay is better too.

However just like you, I really don't like that the attacks don't look as epic anymore. Especially Noire's Infinite Slash and Neptune's Neptune Break.

I'm going with the first one only because it had more video games references and they were done in such a funny way xD *remembers Zack Unfair and SRATS*

Yeah mk 2 had a way more fun battle system but not as customizable as the first one.

On a purely technical level, HDN is a pretty bad game. The repetitive dungeons are an exercise in tedium made all the worse by the item skill mechanic that nobody liked, and while battle animations were neat they took up too much time, if you were on a timed side quest or were in the middle of a break you NEEDED to skip past them, and the skip button needed to be pressed each time individually instead of just being able to be held down. It was just a mess.

About the only thing I can negatively say about MK2 is that my favorite character didn't make it over, but that's not the game's fault.
