I think of the times when atari was as simple as donkey kong and you did NOT hear kids cussing and being verbally abusive to others. If it was still like that then id feel differantly, but kids now days have NO respect for anyone or anything!

It's because parents don't care what their kids do. Parents DO have a choice to say and at what age, a kid is allowed and not allowed to play, depending on if the kids really understand the content. Plus, they don't NEED to play online. Also, kids not having respect is usually because the parents do. Once again, retail can show you clearly with how the kid acts... and then how the parents act. Not all adults have respect for people either and can be very rude.

Kids are perfectly capable of making choices too. Just because they're young doesn't mean they're incapable of common sense.

I would say it isn't a good idea for kids to play games online, but playing games with violence or swearing isn't going to affect a kid at all.

I grew up playing violent games and watching movies with plenty of swearing and I'm not a violent person and I don't swear at all.

Cause it's not about the games. It fundamentally goes back to the parents. I grew up playing games and watching cartoons. Has it made me a bad person? Absolutely not. I would consider myself respectful to others and I understand the value of hardwork. I didn't get this from TV or games. These are values my parents taught me. Television doesn't teach you values. Games certainly don't. Those come from your family. Lack of/poor parenting will always lead to lack of/poor values in the child.

I wouldn't say always since I didn't have a good father, but my mom was a good parent. I turned out fine regardless, because I had common sense.

Parents can do the best job in the world and their kids might still end up messed up. In those cases the blame falls to the kids.

But you had a great mother, so you weren't devoid of good parenting. ;P

It's probably unfair of me to say it with such extremes. I'm sure there are numerous kids with bad parents who end up to be good people and vice versa.

Stopping them from watching tv or using computers is going to make them rebellious.

I suggest letting have both but let them use internet when they're a bit older.

Yes, that's what I plan on doing. There are a lot of kids who are irresponsible and dumb at school because they spend the entire day watching TV or using the computer. I don't want that for my children. However, there is a reason I don't want my children to watch TV.
