I always imagined the avas as that user talking their message, so it depresses me to see an empty box where they're supposed to be.

Right, this is the weird thing, I can still see your avatar, but not say, vampko's.
It seems to be very random as to who can see what.

It feels like the viewable avatars keep rotating for me at least. I've been able to see Chibi Moon the whole time though.

Well, over the weekend it wasn't gonna get resolved. But, we'll probably see it fixed in a few days.

Unfortunately it looks like the forum software is having trouble locating and/or displaying user uploaded avatars and the registration verification image. As of right now, we don't have a fix for this issue, but we'll continue to look into this and hopefully have a fix for it soon.
