Virtual Reality Gaming, the Year of VR?

Postby Alantor2013 » Fri Oct 14, 2016 10:17 am

Hey guys, since the release of the PS VR and the Oculus Rift in March 2016, I was wondering if this year really is the year of VR?

I mean, we seen VR gaming in anime and TV shows, but what if technology keeps advancing as years go by, franchises like Dot Hack and Sword Art Online will become reality? I just hope no one will be deranged and twisted to trap players inside VRMMORPGs and kill them in real life. *Shudder*

What are your thoughts on Virtual Reality Gaming?

Nah, I think it'll still be a bit before it really takes off - although indications are that it will be quite a market by 2020. Among other things, I think we need a truly outstanding title to really sell the system.

...Too early to call and no ice breaker title that tugs at the gamer heart en masse a la SAO so "we'll see" is all one can really say for now, I think.

It will be the year of finding out that no one will adopt VR. Yes.

I think he means VR will fail when the hype for the new shiny toy will fade off.
As a side note, apparently in China VR sold more than expected and Sony has said that they'll have to ramp up the production.

So it will eventually be forgotten or something.

Edit: But so far, reviews for some VR headsets are mostly positive, so who knows? VR will probably be or be not a thing.

I think VR is still mostly in the gimmick stages for now. Feels like the vast majority of VR games are either simple games to showcase the tech (most on-rails or stand-in-one-place shooters for example) or are regular games with it just tacked on to it (take "RE7" for example). Very few actually take advantage of VR as being, well, VR to create a definite unique experience. There are a couple that do attempt to ("Vanishing Realms" is one I'd say definitely comes close) but they are far and wide in between.

There's definitely plenty of room for it to grow into a huge lasting and influential thing...but it's still to early to tell as far as I can see. Could just as easily fall off to the side like motion controls did at this point.
