You can kill them repeatedly though, as they respawn as soon they are out of the minimap range, thus, grinding central.
The Boxed Phalanxes smart. Trick is just rush the Phalanx with everything you've got, and worry about the other guys later, possibly popping a Dispelga if you're having trouble with their buffs.

Though really, if you're not scraping by on those Eidolon fights, you've been using shrouds. :P

Well then. I'm gonna base you not being able to beat them on the grounds they don't have enough HP so go the shop and buy the strongest bangle at the shops for them and level them up to the highest you can with the items you do have. Equip them and you should have a fair amount of HP then just have Vanille start the battle as SAB and Fang as SEN (You will want her to be a SEN the whole battle have her as that for all your Paradigms) Then before he attacks quickly switch to MED/SEN and heal Fang the whole time and DON'T stop. Then when he does Looming Wrath switch back to SAB/SEN and keep debuffing him. Repeat this process until the Gestalt button appears. Sorry if someone already posted this strategy but this is how I beat him.

Next time I play XIII, I'll spend a massive amount of time grinding then try again, using the tips you guys gave me.

@Ring - Other than Hetacon, the only Eidolon I had trouble with was Sazh's.

Not even Odin? That trips everyone up.
Also the first one, at least in my case, simply because I didn't understand what the heck was going on due to the density of the information they threw at you.

Yeah, I found Odin really easy. I guess I'm the black sheep in this situation :P

And yeah the first one was confusing as hell, but at least they had the courtesy to provide someone who heals you :P

Well, it would be unwinnable otherwise seeing as you completely lack a medic.
I still got confused constantly, and it's when I finally figured out you can (and should) Libra things multiple times.
I also didn't have much trouble with Odin, but still took a couple of tries, but they all do unless you know beforehand how to do it.

Hekatonkheires gave me the most trouble of all the summons as well.

I forget the exact method I used to beat him, but I believe it involved switching to Sentinel shortly before he does his most powerful attack.

Pretty much, just make sure you've switched to sentinel during his attacks, otherwise you'll be spending half the battle on your backside.

I'm sure I'll beat Hetacon eventually. And I'm prepared for the worst yet to come. I'll likely grind on the Steppe for fast levels.

Him and the final dungeon, especially the final boss are the hardest parts of the main game I found. Of course post game stuff is probably way harder, but I didn't do much of that. :)

Just poison the fuck out of the final boss and you'll do fine.

Indeed, there are no status aliment that aren't useful in this game.
Spoiler:
The final boss is even vulnerable to Death.

I'd disagree.
Spoiler:
Seeing as you literally cannot die during that one, unless you try really hard anyway.
Good thing though, as otherwise you'd go back miles upon losing.
