Personally, I'm not spending more on a portable console than I spent on an equivalent home console, and at the moment that's what the Vita is asking.

Since it's unreasonable for Sony to take an even bigger loss by lowering the Vita's price, I think they just need to bank on more/better games coming out and persuading people that the Vita is worth their time and money. If the only reason you're not buying a Vita is because of the price, I'll go out on a limb and say that you're not currently the target market.

However, I do think the current situation for Sony is far from optimal and am not sure what else can be done except to get more games out faster :/

Exactly. Games WILL come out, it's just taking a bit since it's so new, and games take longer with better graphics to work with.
Also, I think it's about value. A handheld PS3 (essentially) isn't worth as much as a huge piece of plastic that sits by your tv to project a bigger image? (Just putting it bluntly... I love my PS3!) Let's use Apple products as an example: is buying an iPhone worth hundreds? (Not sure how much they go for right now, and depends on your plan/upgrades). Or how about buying a larger iPhone with no actual phone for $500? You could buy TWO Vitas at that price. But to some, they value Apple, and will gladly pay the price. So whatever the price is, it's about what is personally valued to an individual. Not everyone has alot of money, but many will fork out the cash for Apple products >_>
