A lot of gamers use the terms tactical and strategy interchangeably. For instance, wikipeida redirects to tactical RPG when you search for strategy RPG. Could you explain what you mean by that distinction?

Yes alot of gamers do do that. Incorrectly.

A strategy rpg historically is pure grid. And movement is defined by square grid pieces


a tactical rpg is free roam where you stop at certain points on a map

for example if we were being nit picky

valkyria would be a tactical rpg series, agarest 2 is kinda there too

I am not the one who created the definitions

Thats why most historical sites write S/T rpg because it is true they are very similar. But they are a different sub sub genre really

The funny thing is that when it comes down to it, they are both just types of tactical games... I don't think there is such a thing as a true strategy-rpg... Well, I guess that Generations of Chaos and Dragon Force count, but they are definitely rare.

strategy rpgs really started with fire emblem

and tactical started with lagrisser ( or however you spell that)

Langrisser is closer to a true strategy rpg than a tactical rpg, if you understand the difference between the two words... tactics exist as a part of strategy... or rather I should say that tactical decisions exist as tools for use in the making of strategic decisions. Say your goal is to take a fort. A tactic would be using a catapult to smash through the walls, but that is in the end only one part of the actual plan for taking the fort which would be considered the 'strategy'. A 'strategic' rpg generally has 'conquest' elements... meaning taking cities and towns, exhausting enemy resources, and the like. The Ogre battle series is also strategic in nature... or at least, the main series is. In order to win the battles in that game, it was necessary to decide whether you were going to take the towns along the way, conquering an area piece by piece, or smash through the enemy forces headlong to take the capitol city in order to take victory on the battlefield. That kind of flow is characteristic of 'pure' strategy rpgs, whereas ones like FFT would be considered 'tactical' srpgs going by definition.

Is like the rpgs genre especially Jrpgs: Since most jrpgs give you characters already defined living you witouth a "role" to fullfill in the actual game.

What i meant is that if you like lets say disgaea you like a jrpg not a proper rpg (like demons soul from atlus).
