Well, the simplest explanation for cheaper prices online is that you don't need a store front, only need warehouses and employees who manage those warehouses. All the costs for rent, fixtures, parking, maintenance, cleaning, etc., are gone. Selling online-only also means you get 100% of the advantage of bulk buying and selling- you don't need to "stock" product at locations, you only maintain a single list of "do I have it or not?"

RE: RightStuf, I've bought stuff from them before, their sales are pretty enticing, but Amazon's free shipping makes a pretty big difference as well. I definitely know when I bought FMP + Fumoffu BD, I compared prices and Amazon came out cheaper. No sales or Gold Box or anything, just regular price. Could just be that one occurrence, though.

Yeah, myskaros. That's what I was getting at in my initial post. But you just cannot factor in everything without knowing yourself how the products are acquired and what prices they're acquired for. Do most of the localization companies for anime not have their own websites with links for purchase at the very least?

Yeah there is the odd time when Amazon is cheaper. Rightstuf does have free shipping too for $50, which I don't mind. There's always stuff I want to buy and thing to top the cart with (now they also have the $1, $5 etc blind box deals, which I've heard are good quality stuff) or preorder, so I just do mass purchases every now and then to get to the price point. Preordering being the easiest, of course :p Don't have to worry about paying for it right away...

Most of the companies just link to Amazon or Rightstuf.

Best bet is likely what they link, then. Or you could e-mail that company and ask if there are multiple sources.

For anime, I've only recently looked at NISA's stuff, which obviously they have an online store. I'm not sure what titles I'm going to pursue, the ones I want either aren't licensed (Bakemonogatari), are out of print (Kara no Kyoukaik, Baccano! BD), or are apparently stalled indefinitely (Index).

My guess is that in the case of Rightstuf for example, the companies know they will get sales from them. Thus, Rightstuf buys LARGE bulk quantities (instead of the 2 or 3 copies every Best Buy or whatever may get... if that...) and Rightstuf can sell for cheap! Kind of like how Walmart does things. Also, it's not like there's too much competition in the anime retail world... Everyone else sells for MSRP (or above).

Maybe it's just Sentai Filmworks, but I looked up some titles and they're all cheaper on Amazon :X Could be because I'm in the US, or just a coincidence?

Maria Holic
Nyan Koi!
Samurai Harem
Special A
The World God Only Knows

Anyway, I won't be buying much until I get some paychecks, so I'm in prime position to snipe some sales ;)

It could be a sale too. Amazon had a recent one for Funi titles, so perhaps they're doing one now for Sentai. Rightstuf does the same. Every week or two weeks (depending on how big the publisher is) there's a sale for a specific company.

Nisa already said that sales have been great. I heard stories on how the premium sets were in high demand when they first came out, and booths at cons had a hard time stocking them they'd run out! Plus, they have the cash now to grab licenses of shows before they've aired/just aired. I can assume these licenses would be more pricey, and the more acquisitions, the more I'll assume they are doing well and trying to spread their legs in the industry :)

I don't know if anybody mentioned, but the best way to support the developer/publisher is to buy their games digitally. That way they get the biggest share of the money, because they don't pay for the physical print or to have retailers stock their games.

But always, ALWAYS, buy from the source. Above anything else. Though that's probably pointless to say

Like, buying from the NISA store/etc...
This is only if you want to support them the most. It's not always an option, but even DD services have them paying royalties to the DD companies to have the game/anime hosted there. If you buy from the source, yes, you're paying for the physicalness of it, but that's why the price is higher, and you also can be certain the money actually goes to the publisher/dev at the highest rate.
