How can this bother anyone? It's just... Normal.

I personally like things to match (like light switches), so when one or two of the forum buttons are red, I just mark them as read so they they're all the same.

To be on topic I use to do that with boards like this, then they just kept coming back so I stopped bothering with it.

I like having the red icons, lets me know when a new post happens (obviously) instead of having to click the thread again and looking to see if someone added something

I do like that you can be notified, but it sucks that my perfect balance of always red dots was destroyed

I don't like though how you can never tell which page the new posts start on and if you click the last page then going back destroys all the new markers on the post in the previous pages.

If a topic is worth reading, it's generally worth posting in. And if I post in it, I can just view it with "View your posts". From there, it's fairly easy to sort what I haven't read yet.

Also, I'm quite good at tuning out peripheral cues. Comes with the territory. I didn't notice the advertising billboard on my apartment until someone pointed it out to me.
