Basically, when you capture an enemy, instead of them becoming an ally, you take them to a punishment room and are given turns to make them either join, give you money, or give you treasure

Essentially correct.

Though you can do all three: Take their money, make them point out a treasure on a cleared map, AND force them to join the party.

This is actually rather helpful since when I get into the postgame of Disgaea 4 the Puppy Paw Stick is the first thing I'll go after, and thank you online elements for making it even more fun to dupe items. See, after all those discussions where people assumed the online wasn't worth it, it bites them back as a beneficial item farmer. Take that offline players!!!

yeah... if you are going to dupe from online pirates... well... you'll need a very good gear to at least have any chance to hit then... and you can't dupe residents from itens of online players, soh you'll only get the base item...

So... if you can dupe from online pirates, you probably don't need it lol

I have a quick question for anyone who has the game, if you don't mind me asking. I usually try to get all of the items from the Hospital at the beginning of the game, and was wondering what the top rewards for healing HP, SP and dead characters were?

Also, are you still able to select each individual item like in D2/D3, and can you receive Legendary versions of these items, or just up to Rare?

If someone could answer this question for me, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I haven't ran into a Legendary item from the hospital ever in D$. I've been trying for months, and there doesn't seem to be a club for it. Otherwise it's all the same as before.

Magichange is "free" in this game ala D2DHD. Any monster can combine with any human at any time.

To answer the other part of your question, yes, you can pick which item you take and leave the other to try again.

I pretty much assumed that you can already do that.

Nope, you can buy all you want once you get it! I just blew a load of cash on it this afternoon.

Also, if you guys haven't noticed yet/if this is a new feature (I'm not sure - might not be), you can rearrange your items and access your Warehouse in Mystery Rooms in the Item World. Pretty handy!

I've been doing this in 2 and 3, so it's not really new. It can be a lifesaver if you realize you don't have an Mr. Gency's exit on you.
