Having multiple sexes of the same class with just slightly different aptitudes always felt a bit redundant to me, when such slots could have been given to entirely unique classes instead.
That having been said, with the introduction of interchangeable Evilities in D3 even the alternate sex versions of the classes could be distinctive, having access to Evilities that the other gender did not. But, so long as those Evilities (or similar ones) are still available in the overall pool of characters I don't mind if they nix an opposite sex doppelganger; especially if it's to make room for a genuinely unique class.
So much outrage over the loss of the female versions... funny how no one seems to complain that there hasn't been a male Thief class since D1.
1. Aptitudes aside, the usage of the Gunslinger was drastically different from the Gunner - she was a treasure hunter, he was more of a sniper. If I wanted a gun-specific character, I might have gone with him, but her abilities and evilities were just better. Had she visually been a straight up "Merchant" class (what she's clearly based off of, instead of tooled to work with an existing class, would you have been more inclined to miss her?
2. Here's the problem with your logic: It DIDN'T make room for genuinely unique classes and characters. In D4, we have exploding EDF Soldiers, youngerer Geomancers, and Cheeleaders that went to college and became Professors. Additionally, the Majin lost their fight against technology and were replaced by Androids, and there isn't a single new monster class. All that's been added that's genuinely has been done so through DLC, and the DLC shouldn't be included when talking about "making room for classes" if you ask me.
2. As vampko has pointed out many times, the thief in D1 was always female. That said, I listed it in the "Lost Classes" thread in the D4 forum all the same, if you want to take a gander.
