Xseed brings Ys RPGs to Steam

Postby Shizuka » Wed Mar 07, 2012 5:15 am

Niche publisher Xseed Games announced today that it will expand its business to include Valve's Steam platform, starting with translated PC versions of Nihon Falcom's acclaimed Ys games.

So far, the company has revealed two games in its Steam lineup: Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin. The former title originally debuted in North America in 2010 on the PSP, while the latter has yet to see a proper English release.

"To start our new publishing arrangement on Steam with two standout entries from Falcom's action-based Ys series, one of which has never been made available in English before, is an ideal situation for us, and we are excited about the future possibilities," said Xseed president Jun Iwasaki.

Xseed confirmed that Ys: The Oath in Felghana will debut on steam on March 19, and noted that Ys Origins has no set release window.

Hope they add something newer to the mix. Nevertheless, it's good news if this turns out to be something solid.

Most of the possible Steam games are games they already released on another platform, but the idea of every PC gamer getting Corpse Party in english on Steam gives me the chills.

Well, I meant Ys Origin since that's already been released on PC in Japan.

That'd be nice since it's PC-only, but maybe XSEED will release any finished Ys title on Steam before taking on the localization for a PC title.

Well, that's the thing. YsF was only translated on PSP. It's never been officially translated for PC. I haven't played the PSP version, so I can't speak for the contrasts in text, if any. If there aren't many, it shouldn't be much work for them. It'd require editing the PC version with the PSP version's text. But you're right in that it'd be easier as long as the games aren't too different.

Anyhow, I think it'd be a good start.

I think that Falcom released a PC Update of Felghana for the PC when they released the PSP version in Japan, and as XSEED doesn't go programming, it'd be Falcom the one in charge of getting XSEED's script and program it once again, but for the PC version.

XSEED can implement text just fine on their own.

A port to Sony's PlayStation Portable system. This is the only version to receive an official English localization, courtesy of Xseed Games.[3] In order to offset the localization costs of such a "niche" game, XSEED licensed and paid for the use of a fan translation that had been produced for the PC version.[4]

Hahaha. I helped fund that translation. I still have the original patch. So it looks like XSEED has next to nothing to do since it was the original PC translation they used anyway.

Why did they waste time re-releasing things already on the PC on the PSP? x: A different audience, I suppose.

@Shiz: What I meant in my last post was that they can import text. But I think I might have misread what you meant. I'm going back and forth between the PC and other things, so I'm only skimming. Now it's just cloudy. Mind elaborating?

If the script is the same, the biggest amount of work on getting Ys Felghana on the PC would be from Falcom, they're the ones who'd do the programming in this case.

if it comes out on steam, it is a guaranteed purchase for me. I am a bit curious if this will come to fruition though. Just remember, years ago, squenix was looking at release FF7 and FF8 on steam too...

If Corpse Party comes out on Steam, would it be the PC version or the PSP version, I wonder? This is important because the experience would be very different if they used the PC version instead of the PSP remake.

The PSP version was released one year later for the PC.

Is that how XSEED do it? That's very unconventional.
