If you're going through so many hoops to explain it, it wasn't worth introducing in the first place. Whether Shu is blind or not doesn't affect anything, but making him blind does throw the continuity of the show into question. The fact that it isn't immediately obvious why Shu goes blind just proves that the whole concept was unnecessary, or that it should have been explained in more detail to the viewers.
