Yeah, getting the good ending is in itself quite satisfying considering how absurdly easy it is to get locked out of it... Thankfully it's
much easier to get the canon, happy end in the second game though... Especially seeing how, well, the canon ending there isn't just the "best" ending... Rather, it's the
only ending that's even remotely satisfying. At least the normal ending of D1 still
feels like a proper ending, even if it is kind of a downer.
I'm still leaning towards PS2, now moreso because its probably a good idea to play the base version first, and then do the ones with extra content.
