Mx0 was gonna be my example, but i decided to avoid putting it, since some might not know what it is, resulting in them reading it, and being disappointed with the lame ending

Man, all the haters... newest Medaka chapter came out on scanlations today (new arc), and it's still as crazy as ever.

It might be a bit more "typical shounen" than it started out, but I like that it's not just straight-up tournament bracket style like other shounen fare (Bleach, One Piece, etc.), and it's not even always street fight-style. There's actually thought put into the setting and style of conflict.

EDIT: Also, for an abrupt ending, I thought Mx0 was handled quite well, not like other early-ending manga (Psyren is probably my biggest disappointment, although it's still one of my favorite manga; Double Arts was really lame).

She's a Mary Sue, but it was on purpose. Some people can't look past the fact that it's on purpose.

What's a 'mary sue' anyway? I see it thrown around a bunch, but I'm not getting what it means, since it's been used for MANY different archtypes

And, TVtropes holds no pull on me. It's already proven useless to me three times, and it's never really holding of the information I care about.

I see Medaka as someone who was born with power. Whether she wanted it or not is irrelevant. Because she grew up with this. She decided to take a less taken path, and use that power to help others. In all of this, she's cast aside her own ability to be 'human'. But, she does that for the sake of others.

That's just a short (I'm really sleepy) description of Medaka from what I've seen so far. Nowhere does it fit that silly trope.

You know, the first two episodes of this show has really confused me. I was expecting a completely mindless and pointless ecchi-fest.

However, after watching it, I ended up incredibly dissapointed, because it actually has a basis for something more than that. A decent character design for the female lead and a good dynamic with the male lead. Both of which were interesting, and the general premise has quite a bit of potential.

However, unfortunatley, despite that potential it is the mindless and pointless ecchi-fest I was expecting, which makes it even more dissapointing, and they completely ruined any chance I had of respecting the female lead with Gainax'ing boobs every time she's on screen.

I didn't read all of that TVTropes entry, but this paragraph stood out for me because it's how I understand the general use of the term "Mary Sue":

The prototypical Mary Sue is a (female) character in a fanfic who obviously serves as an idealized version of the author mainly for the purpose of Wish Fulfillment. She's exotically beautiful, often having an unusual hair or eye color, and has a similarly cool and exotic name. She's exceptionally talented in an implausibly wide variety of areas, and may possess skills that are rare or nonexistent in the canon setting. She also lacks any realistic, or at least story-relevant, character flaws — either that or her "flaws" are obviously meant to be endearing.

I agree with Daverost, Isin's meta-characterizing on us here with the entire series. As always with Isin, if you get the characters and interactions and wordplay, it's easier to enjoy the show. If you look for standard fare, it will appear extremely subpar to you. Medaka Box doesn't hit you over the head with its metagaming (unlike BMG, KTG, Zaregoto), and I think that's why so many people don't "get" it and think it's bad.

Medaka is totally a Mary Sue, but that's sort of the point. The same can actually be said of a LOT of characters in this show, and that's sort of the point. The manga was loads of fun, though.

Well, 1 episode down for me. Figure I'll go ahead and watch the part I like, then drop it when it gets stupid.

I like Medaka, her over-the-topness is great, and the interplay with Zenkichi.
