Shows usually do that a lot they take up a episode to explain a backstory of a character or to focus on a different story on different characters you know, it's only a 12 episode show and the plot isn't something that'll take a lot of episodes to explain, so no rush.

Total amount of episodes isn't confirmed. Someone posted (in the Accel World thread) that ANN usually isn't the best source (mostly on currently airing series info); gonna guess the site just threw out 12 episodes because 1 season is usually 12~13 episodes. Same with wikipedia which has the series listed as 13 episodes without a source. Myanimelist has it listed as unknown.
