Just wondering do you have to play the games in order to understand the full storyline?

Technically yes. If you start with Totori or Meruru, there will be scenes or conversations you do not have background on, or even get plot details spoiled for you.

Personally I played Totori, then Meruru, then Rorona, then back to platinum Totori, so my second playthrough through Totori, I really appreciated some of the things I didn't get before.

Same for the Dusk series, can you start with Escha and Logy, yes, will there be conversations/character occurrences and lost details, yes. Is it crucial to the story in that particular game, no.

Also, Ayesha apparently is referenced far less in Escha & Logy than the Arland series did with its games, so there's that to keep in mind too.

I can't speak for the previous atelier games...

but for the Arland games on PS3,

start playing with Rorona, really, just start with Rorona..there's no reason not too.
It's a really good game on its own. Some of its features are the best in the series of three games.
imo it has the best story/writer-ship

You'll get a much better appreciation of the characters in totori if you had played rorona first.
