you might have the famed YLoD. Does it blink yellowish before it shuts off? If it does, that's the YLoD. Even if it isn't I highly suggest backing up all your game saves. You may be on the path. Also, if you have any gameshare accounts, make sure to de-activate those (not delete, De-activate)

That was the sign I was about to get the YLoD, but try researching it more. Either case, BACK UP YOUR SAVES.

I have the 80GB MGS bundle system which was starting to freeze up randomly about 4-5 months ago. It was out of warranty, so I did a backup, disassembled the system and cleaned it out (oddly enough, hardly any dust after 2 years of use!) and applied new thermal paste to the heatsinks. The old paste was pretty dried out and crumbly. Now it runs quieter and no more freezes.

Also, as a possible fix, turn off the power, and then you turn it back on, hold the button until you hear two beeps in quick succession.
Beeeeeep.
Beeeeeep. (Normally, this is the step you'd stop at to reset video settings)
BeepBeep. (Let go of the button here)

Access Rebuild Database. Run it, and nothing else.

It will remove your players met, your messages (both in and out), and your saved playlists, but the XMB will improve by a noticeable amount (and even more so while in-game) and one will experience less crashes in-game.

Won't solve everything, mind, but maintaining your PS3 is good regardless.
