The first SRPG of the Disgaea series, set in the Netherworld, makes its appearance. With an unprecedented setting, NIS has built a game full of zest and original flavor. The recipe that was created here has thrived throughout the rest of the Disgaea series.

2004

In Phantom Brave, the year is 913 in a world called Ivoire, where lives Marona, a 13 year old orphaned girl with a special ability to communicate with phantoms. Her ability brings resentment from others, but cheerful and optimistic Marona is not bothered. Marona believes in her parents' teachings that people will one day come to like her as long as she stays compassionate and kind. Now Marona travels throughout Ivoire with her guardian, "Ash the Phantom," to resolve disputes around the world.

This emotional tale—played out as a unique, isometric, grid-free SRPG—still captivates the hearts of many to this day.

While sticking to the Disgaea formula that received such great praise, a new formula was injected into the series' second installment.

In Soul Nomad & the World Eaters, Gig, the fearsome Master of Death, is back...and he's pissed off! Taking over your body is just the first step on his quest for global domination. It's up to you to rein him in and use his power, along with your band of fellow warriors, to stop the horrific World Eaters from annihilating everything. But be careful...power always comes with a price.

You control how this story of power and destruction ends as this SRPG presents multiple routes and drastic endings.

The third installment of Disgaea uses the campus of Nether Institute, Evil Academy, as its setting.

The much anticipated fourth installment of Disgaea is an upside-down, social reform story that begins in Hades, the prison of the Netherworld. With high-resolution graphics, NIS was able to transcend Mr. Takehito Harada's illustrations, along with plenty of variation in movement, to the characters' appearence.

Disgaea D2 takes place a number of years after the first installment of the Disgaea series. Once again, the impudent Overlord Laharl and his less-than-loyal vassals stir up some trouble.

"Revenge and rebellion" and "assembly of Overlords" are the themes of Disgaea's fifth installment. The Disgaea series makes its PlayStation®4 debut with a story that boasts the most volume and scale in its history, achieving an even greater evolution with its end-facing training system.
